Song information

The single was made available on most download services on July 19, 2006 and was released as a CD single on September 4. It became the band's first UK number 1 single and topped the charts for four consecutive weeks. It ended the year as the UK's fourth best-selling single of the year.[1]

The song was in the UK Singles Chart for 27 weeks and performed live by the band at the BRIT Awards, 2007.

The song's tempo, arrangement, use of falsetto vocals, and subject matter have been compared by reviewers in The Guardian and The Sun newspapers to Leo Sayer's 1976 hit "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing". The song also features a rhythm piano that makes reference to "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" by The Four Seasons.

The song has a segment after the first chorus that was composed on the Commodore 64 using the on board SID sound chip in the computer.

Music video

The video is staged as an animated bill poster (outside Phoenix Cinema in North London), with the camera zooming in with the poster filling the frame and observing motion within the poster before pulling out and the image returning to a still bill poster. It was created using a combination of digital compositing techniques, stop/start technology and background/foreground illusions.

Chester McKee, a contestant on I'd Do Anything, appears at the start of the video.

The music video was directed by Andy Soup with Independent Films, with producer Verity White and director of photography Alex Barber. Post-production was done by flame artist Ben Robards at Absolute Post and editor Amanda James at Final.
